June 21st is
Father's Day. Gentlemen, be grateful for your friends,
family and loved ones. Be sure to hug your kids and
kiss your wife or significant others. If you have not
already thought about getting your health in order, now may be a
good time to take stock.
This may also be a good
time to evaluate how you feel. Have you lost a step?
Gained weight despite exercise? Feel tired more than often
than you used to? Sleep less restfully? Think less
clearly? Have fewer and softer erections? Maybe it is
time to have your testosterone checked. You can complete a
screening self-questionnaire to begin the process:

Importance of
Testosterone |
|
Healthy Aging in Men
Testosterone is the
primary sex hormone (androgen or steroid hormone) produced by the
testes and it plays an essential role in the health of men.
Beyond determining the male sex characteristics, testosterone is
a determinant of muscle strength, bone mass, libido, potency, and
sperm production, or spermatogenesis.
Whenever testosterone
is discussed, most people think first of male sexual potency and
the reproductive organs. Although adequate testosterone can
improve erectile quality and sexual performance, the heart, in
fact, is one of the organs with the greatest number of
testosterone receptors. Testosterone is associated with
several effects on cardiac health.
The brain is another
organ with an abundance of testosterone receptors. The
Health in Men Study published in the Clinical Endocrinology
Journal 2008 concluded that "higher serum free testosterone
is associated with better cognitive function in aging
men."
Testosterone
supplementation is accompanied by gains in lean mass across all
age groups, reduced body fat with some preferential fat loss on
the trunk (central or visceral fat). Retained lean mass is
associated with increased strength and coordination, maintained
physical function and less injury from falls.

Eggs Have
Gotten a Bad Rap |
|
Add Back to Breakfast Without Guilt
The poor maligned egg,
villified as the source of artery-clogging
cholesterol. Thought to be too hign in cholesterol to be
safely eaten unless consumed as an egg-white omelet. The
usual result is a breakfast of excess carbohydrates:
cereal, muffins and orange juice. Even the recommendation
to eat oatmeal frequently translates into eating the 1-5 minute
versions which are not much better. For most people
the high carbohydrate load from these highly processsed and
easily absorbed carbohydrates are a substantially greater risk to
their health than the cholesteol they get from eggs.
Eggs are a source of
all natural and very high quality protein that keeps you
satisfied longer. More than half of the egg's protein is
found in the yolk. Nearly 30 years of research has
concluded that healthy adults can enjoy eggs without significantly
impacting their risk of heart disease.
